The Segment Group concept is a powerful way to logically group different parts of your network together so that those groups can then be analysed as a statistical unit. In our consulting work to analyse and report on network trends, we use Segment Groups extensively.

As an example, one of the needs that often arise in network analyses is to monitor not only the long term performance of specific projects, but also of logical groups of projects. So for example you may want to analyse the performance of all road rehabilitation work that involved a certain type of Base Layer.

JunoViewer Web makes it easy for you to define such groups and then use them to analyse the performance of each group. In the figure below, we show an example where two groups were created: "Base Type B - Zone 1" and "Base Type B - Zone 2" (zone could be, for example a geological area or a traffic intensity). Notice that a segment group can contain segments from many different sections and even from different networks. For more information about the user of Segment Groups in JunoViewer Web, please see this post.

Once you have defined your Segment Groups, you can do easily do a comparison across the different groups using the Group Compare view, like this:

You can see in this example, that the group "Base Type B - Zone 2" stands out as having a worse condition for the selected Data Parameter compared to other groups in the "Demo" category.

For any such identified problem groups, you can use the Trend Report view to investigate long term performance trends, as shown in this example:

From here, you can use the Project Analysis View to look into projects that fall into the problem category, or you can use SQL View to do a low level export of data within the problem groups.

We have found the use of Segment Groups to be a very powerful analytical tool within the JunoViewer Web framework. Once your segment groups are accurately defined, this becomes an asset to your team, and reporting tasks that normally take days can be literally collapsed into an hour or less.
