This post discusses when a FWP is locked and how it can be locked or unlocked in JunoViewer Web. The ability for a manager to lock a FWP allows for a FWP to be protected against unwanted changes. The relatively complex workflow associated with the exporting, importing and field inspections related to a FWP means that locking and unlocking a FWP is not always straightforward, and needs to be approached with the bigger picture in mind.
The key concepts that need to be understood with respect to FWP locking and unlocking are as follows:
- When a FWP is locked, the FWP can still be viewed in FWP and it can still be exported. But no changes are allowed to the FWP within JunoViewer Web.
- For example, treatments cannot be modified in a locked FWP via Forecast View and a deterioration model cannot be run (again) on a locked FWP.
- If a FWP is locked, then a new FWP with the same version code can NOT be imported via the FWP Management page- the user will be notified that the FWP is locked. Note that - if a FWP is not locked, then importing a new FWP with the same code will replace the existing FWP, so users need to be careful to ensure that they select the correct FWP version code when importing a new FWP.
- When a FWP is locked, it cannot be deleted (for example, from the FWP Management Page.
- Whenever an editable FWP is exported for use in the Field Inspection Tool (FIT), that FWP is automatically locked. This is because we assume the FWP is being edited in the field, and we do not want to allow conflicting changes to the FWP to occur;
- When the results of a FWP are synced back to JunoViewer Web via the Field Inspection Tool, the changes are put into a holding table. These changes can be finally committed via the 'FWP Change Review' page. Upon final sync, the FWP will automatically be unlocked.
The recommended procedure for managing different versions of a FWP is as follows:
- Create a new FWP by importing your segment lengths and assigned treatments using the FWP and Segment Sets data page (Note: if your network has a custom method to create an empty FWP before modelling, you can skip this step).
- Run your model to apply treatment effects and/or assign treatments as defined by the triggers in your DMS file.
- View your FWP in Forecast View, make changes as needed;
- Export your FWP for field inspections using the FIT - this will lock the FWP.
- Sync your FWP changes back to JunoViewer Web and finalize the commitment of changes using the FWP Change Review page under the FWP Menu
- If you want to create a new version of a locked FWP, use the FWP Clone features that you will find on the FWP Management page (under FWP menu)
- Your first version FWP will then remain safely locked and you can use the newly cloned version to explore the impact of planned changes to your FWP. You can then either remove the first version later on, or revert back to the first version if the second version is not an improvement.
